Like children climbing a tree we have taken on a few branches and as our ascent continues we are perhaps beginning to get a sense of what we are climbing for, a sense of what our goal is. However, like a child climbing a tree we may suddenly become aware of the fact that the height presents a danger and fear of failure or falling and being injured. Parents often say things like "be careful" but do not hand children manuals on tree climbing and most of us were not given specifics on the purposeful living or the pursuit of meaning. Life is largely learned through experience.
Think about it. If you were raised in an environment in which religious morality, and or, personal achievement was emphasized or even expected, where did you find the tools or the wisdom to attain such goals & standards? Many religious institutions, cultures & families have strong expectations for how an individual should lead a life of purpose but there is often very little practical instruction or even encouragement on how to go about it. Most of us fall into patterns of education, relationships and careers/jobs to at the very least give us lives autonomy. Though all of these are important they do not necessarily guarantee that we feel or will ultimately view our life as meaningful.
like love meaning needs to be discovered & sought after and there are certainly ways of approaching the process, that generally speaking, will yield better results.
In this branch we will explore a few insights and suggestions on where to begin in this often ignored and very challenging aspect of being human.
